He was gentle now, as though he pitied me, and tried coaxing me out of my distraction. “This is the perfect night for our resident ghost,” he told me. “Wouldn’t you like to meet her?”
“Ghosts don’t walk before midnight,” I said grumpily.
His face grew bright with mischief. “This one does. She was wife to Matthew, the most handsome of Lucinda Garcia’s sons, and she knew he was unfaithful. She was not much of a woman, I’m afraid, since her way out was to hang herself from the canopy of the bed in the Green Room. Now and then, someone will see her looking out the windows of that room on a rainy night. Or a servant will swear she’s come upon Isabelle sleeping in the bed and that the figure faded away as she watched. She’s a harmless ghost, concerned with her own troubles, which she seems doomed to go on enduring forever. She died on a rainy night, and nights like this one are always the best for sightings.”
Setting my book aside, he pulled me from the chair. Abby watched us doubtfully as we left the library together, and Colin called to her to tell Tristan, if he came, that we had gone to visit the Wolfe Haven ghost.
The room waited for us with rain whispering at the panes and the bed lost in a canopy of green darkness. A draft crept in from closed windows and the candle flames dipped, throwing eerie shadows onto the walls. Colin turned off the lamp, leaving only candlelight.
“Our ghost doesn’t care for too much illumination.”
